The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has approved a plan to raise the minimum buying prices for Samba and Kiri Samba paddy varieties. This move aims to boost production in the upcoming seasons. During the 2025 Yala Season, the Paddy Marketing Board bought one kilogram of Nadu, Samba, and Kiri Samba at prices of Rs. 120, Rs. 125, and Rs. 132, respectively. A committee set up by the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation has suggested changing the current minimum prices to better support farmers. Following this suggestion, the Food Policy and Security Committee decided to keep the minimum purchasing price for one kilogram of Nadu paddy at Rs. 120. However, it will raise the minimum price for one kilogram of Samba from Rs. 125 to Rs. 130 and for Kiri Samba from Rs. 132 to Rs. 140. The Cabinet of Ministers has now approved these new minimum purchasing prices.
