The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has given the green light to put into action the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy. This policy aims to ensure fair sharing of benefits in the fisheries sector and promote sustainable practices in fisheries and aquaculture. The process to create this policy started some time ago and has been revised to meet current needs. However, it had not received Cabinet approval until now. Following the current government's policy statement, ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor’, the policy has been reworked to align with the government's economic and development goals. The Department of National Planning has also provided input for the revised policy. As a result, the Cabinet has approved the plan put forward by the Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Marine Resources to implement the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, integrating it with other related policies.
