Caught on Camera: Three-Wheeler Crushed by Sagarika Express at Deadly Aluthgama Level Crossing

A chilling CCTV recording has captured the fatal moment a three-wheeler was struck by the Sagarika express train at an unprotected railway level crossing in Aluthgama, sending shockwaves through the local community and reigniting urgent calls for improved safety measures at unmanned crossings across the island.

The Incident

The footage, which has since circulated widely, shows the three-wheeler entering the crossing moments before the express train bore down at speed, leaving no time for evasion. The violent collision resulted in fatalities, with the mangled wreckage of the vehicle testament to the sheer force of the impact.

Aluthgama, a coastal town situated along the main southern railway line, has a number of level crossings that remain unprotected — meaning there are no functioning barriers, warning lights, or attendants to alert road users of approaching trains.

A Recurring Danger

Unprotected railway crossings have long been identified as a critical safety hazard in Sri Lanka. Tragedies of this nature are not isolated incidents, and transport safety advocates have repeatedly urged authorities to prioritise the installation of proper barriers and automated warning systems at high-risk crossings throughout the country.

  • Many level crossings on Sri Lanka's railway network remain unmanned or unprotected.
  • Three-wheelers and motorcycles are among the most vulnerable vehicles at such crossings.
  • Previous fatal accidents at similar crossings have prompted temporary public outcry but limited sustained action.

Calls for Accountability

The existence of unprotected crossings on busy rail corridors is an accident waiting to happen. Every delay in addressing this is a decision that costs lives.

Transport safety campaigners and members of the public have renewed demands for the Sri Lanka Railways Department and relevant authorities to conduct an immediate audit of all unprotected level crossings and implement emergency safety upgrades without further delay.

Police are continuing investigations into the Aluthgama incident, while the CCTV evidence is expected to form a central part of the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
