Political analyst Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe has cautioned that ongoing military conflicts in the Middle East could have serious effects on Sri Lanka and other Asian nations. He pointed out that the countries involved show no signs of wanting to stop the fighting, which could lead to a major crisis in the region. Dr. Weerasinghe mentioned that Israel and the United States have conducted airstrikes against Iran, and after 36 days of conflict, the situation continues to raise alarms. In a media interview, he stated that Asian countries will encounter major difficulties, and there is likely to be more domestic resistance within these nations. Social and political unrest may grow, affecting Sri Lanka as part of the region. He emphasized that the conflict has already sparked a global economic crisis, and if it continues, it could worsen into a severe economic downturn. “This war has already caused disruptions in global supply chains and important energy sources. If the fighting goes on past 36 days, Asian countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Singapore, which rely heavily on oil from the Middle East, will suffer even more. This will not only increase economic resistance in these nations but also raise social and political tensions. Keeping government authority intact under these circumstances could be a significant challenge,” he explained. Dr. Weerasinghe also warned that even if the conflict ends soon, it will take at least two years for the global economy to bounce back. “Even after the war is over, it will take around two years or more to restore the global economy. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have already slowed down global economic recovery, and the current situation could make these challenges much worse in the coming months.”
