Senate Republicans again reject effort to rein in President Trump over Iran war
Senate Republicans have once again turned down a resolution that would require President Donald Trump to get approval from Congress for any future military actions against Iran. The Senate voted 47 to 53 against the proposal. GOP Senator Rand Paul voted with Democrats to support it, while Democratic Senator John Fetterman sided with Republicans to block it. This marks the third time that Democrats have tried and failed to vote on war powers regarding Iran since the conflict began. Democrats have vowed to continue pushing for votes until Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth testify publicly about Iran in Congress. So far, the Republican-led Congress has not conducted any open oversight hearings on the conflict, although there have been some classified briefings for members. Even if the resolution had passed, it would have faced significant challenges in Congress, needing to go through a full amendment process in the Senate before reaching the House, and it would likely face a presidential veto that would require a two-thirds majority to override.
