Public urged to limit electricity use at night; No power cuts planned
Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has asked the public to conserve electricity from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. He emphasized that, despite the ongoing issues in the Middle East and the energy crisis, there are currently no plans for power cuts. These comments were made during a meeting of the Gampaha District Development Committee. Minister Jayakody said, “If you can, please turn off at least one light and help us as much as you can. Electricity during those hours is produced using fuel. There is no problem during the day. As responsible citizens of Sri Lanka, we should support this effort at night because the burden falls on us, the people. The government aims to ensure that electricity and fuel are provided without causing trouble for the public and that daily life goes on smoothly. I believe we are managing this well in our region, and we must keep it up. We are taking all the necessary actions, including buying fuel. I assure you that the government does not plan to impose power cuts, even though some have suggested it. We have enough fuel to satisfy all needs until May, so there is no reason to worry.” Additionally, Buddhika Samarakesara, the Director of the National System Control Center, mentioned at a press briefing in Colombo that a steady power supply can be guaranteed until the end of April.
