Philippines declares energy emergency over Middle East conflict risks
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr announced on Tuesday that the country is in a national energy emergency due to risks from the conflict in the Middle East. He described the situation as an "imminent danger" to the nation's energy supply. A new committee has been established to ensure the smooth movement, supply, and availability of essential goods like fuel, food, medicine, and agricultural products. In an executive order made public, Marcos explained that the ongoing conflict has caused uncertainty in global energy markets, disrupted supply chains, and led to rising international oil prices, threatening the energy security of the Philippines. "The declaration of a national energy emergency will allow the government to take quick and organized actions under existing laws to tackle the risks from the global energy supply disruptions and their impact on the local economy," he stated. The emergency status will last for one year and gives the government permission to buy fuel and petroleum products to maintain a steady supply, including the option to pay part of contracts upfront if needed. Philippine Energy Secretary Sharon Garin mentioned in a news briefing that the country currently has about 45 days' worth of fuel based on how much is used. She added that the government is trying to acquire 1 million barrels of oil from both Southeast Asia and other regions to strengthen its reserves, but there may be challenges with future orders. This declaration should allow the government to respond more quickly and avoid normal procedures in dealing with the effects of the Middle East conflict, which has raised oil prices and disrupted global markets.
