Several private bus operators suspend services amid delay in fare revision
Long lines formed at major bus terminals in Sri Lanka this morning (23) as multiple private bus operators halted their services, waiting for an official fare update. This strike led to major inconveniences for passengers, many of whom were left without transport options during busy hours. The disruption follows the government's announcement to change fuel prices, starting from midnight on March 21. Due to the rise in the price of Lanka Auto Diesel, bus operators informed transport authorities that they needed to raise fares to cover growing operating costs. Despite asking for a fare review by yesterday (22), they decided to stop services today because the authorities did not respond. The National Transport Commission (NTC) confirmed that the recent fuel price hike has affected the current bus fare system by over 10 percent. The Commission also mentioned that a Cabinet proposal regarding the fare change is set to be presented today, with the formal approval likely to come by the end of the day. A new bus fare system is expected to be revealed shortly after the Cabinet's decision. Nevertheless, bus union representatives have stated that they will keep their services suspended until the new fares are officially announced.
