Increased heat exposure can raise concerns over child dehydration - Health Officials
Health officials in Sri Lanka are warning parents to be extra careful about keeping children hydrated during the extreme heat. Dr. Deepal Perera, a consultant pediatrician at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo, advised that children should drink plenty of water and natural liquids. He highlighted that if a child experiences drowsiness, loss of appetite, or body aches, it is important to encourage them to drink more fluids. Dr. Perera also pointed out that the hot weather increases the chances of skin problems like rashes and infections. To combat this, he recommended bathing children at least twice a day. He noted that kids involved in sports, such as school athletic competitions, face an even greater risk of dehydration and heatstroke if they do not drink enough. He warned that these issues could lead to serious health problems, including death, and stressed the need for parents and guardians to stay alert. Dr. Perera explained, “When children are in the sun, especially during school sports, they can develop these problems. Therefore, it is crucial for them to drink lots of water and natural fluids. If they show signs like drowsiness, loss of appetite, or body pain, they should receive more fluids. Skin issues, like rashes, are also more common now, so bathing children at least twice daily is essential. Letting them stay in water for about 20 minutes can help reduce these skin problems.”
