Sri Lanka's largest groundwater source has been found in Pitabeddara, according to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB). This discovery happened while drilling tube wells near the Pitabeddara Police Station. Indrajith Gamage, the Geologist responsible for the Southern Province, mentioned that this is the first time a water source with a steady flow of 10,000 litres (10 cubic metres) per minute has been located in the country. Previously, the largest groundwater source was in the Madhu area, which had a flow rate of 7,000 litres per minute. The tube well drilling followed studies of rock layers and the use of technical tools to find places where underground water is present due to strata fractures. The NWSDB plans to provide water from this new source to residents in Pitabeddara, Morawaka, and nearby areas who are experiencing water shortages.
