A Canadian couple was arrested this morning (10) at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for allegedly trying to smuggle over 32 kilograms of ‘Kush’ cannabis into Sri Lanka. Customs officials reported that the street value of the seized cannabis is approximately Rs. 32.15 million. The couple, a 25-year-old man and his 29-year-old wife, come from the Alberta region in Canada. Officials noted that the man works for a private security firm, while his wife is looking for a job. They arrived at BIA around 10:45 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-403 from Bangkok, Thailand, according to a report from Ada Derana. During a search, Customs officers found 32 kilograms and 159 grams of ‘Kush’ cannabis packed in 23 sealed bags hidden in two of their suitcases. The couple and the confiscated drugs have been transferred to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) at the airport for further investigation.
