Heavy rains in Nairobi have led to the deaths of at least 23 people due to severe flooding in Kenya’s capital. Police reported that around 30 individuals were rescued, but many others drowned after being carried away by rivers, with some victims suffering electrocution. The Kenyan military has been sent to assist those trapped in their vehicles, while police noted extensive damage to buildings and numerous road closures. According to the National Police Service (NPS) of Kenya, the neighborhoods most affected include Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, South B and C, Pipeline/Embakasi, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, and parts of Westlands. Additionally, major roads such as Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, Thika Superhighway, Jogoo Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road have also been impacted. “The heavy rains have caused serious flooding, tragically resulting in 23 deaths, damage to property, road closures, and displacement of residents,” the statement indicated. The NPS mentioned that officers, along with other groups, carried out overnight search and rescue missions, successfully saving 29 individuals who are now receiving assistance. “Our response teams are fully active, promptly addressing emergency calls and continuing search and rescue efforts. We are closely monitoring the situation and are dedicated to ensuring the safety of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors,” the NPS stated.
