Iran FM- Oman events not intentional; military units now independent and isolated, acting on prior directives
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that the recent events in Oman were not intentional, emphasizing that Tehran did not mean to escalate tensions in the Gulf. In an interview with Al Jazeera, he noted, “What happened in Oman was not our choice. We have already instructed our Armed Forces to be cautious about their targets.” This statement comes amid ongoing attacks from the United States and Israel on Iran. Araghchi mentioned that Iran's military units are now operating independently and are somewhat isolated, acting on general directions provided earlier. These comments followed reports of Iranian strikes occurring for a second consecutive day in locations including Dubai, Doha, Manama, and the Omani port of Duqm. He also pointed out that Tehran has reached out to regional partners to clarify its stance and avoid misunderstandings. Araghchi revealed that he had communicated with several officials, especially in Oman and Qatar, to make it clear that Iran does not wish to confront its neighboring countries. He recognized that some leaders in the region are upset or angry about the situation but insisted that Iran has been forced into this conflict. He views the escalation as a war initiated by the U.S. and Israel, urging Gulf nations to direct their pressure towards them instead of Iran. Oman and Qatar have played neutral roles and facilitated discussions regarding the nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.
