Govt launches special programme to safeguard tourists and migrant workers amid Middle East crisis
Due to the recent unrest in the Middle East and Gulf area, the Sri Lankan Government has started special operations to ensure the safety of foreign tourists in Sri Lanka and to support Sri Lankan migrant workers abroad. These measures were discussed during a meeting yesterday (01) at the Presidential Secretariat, led by Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe and Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD). To assist tourists facing challenges in the country, the Government has decided to offer a free two-week (14-day) extension on their visas. An urgent action plan will be developed in partnership with relevant embassies through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This plan aims to provide necessary support and ensure the safety of tourists in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, due to airspace closures in several Middle Eastern countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will work with airlines to explore alternative flight options for tourists returning to their home countries. The Government will also engage with stakeholders to discuss alternative travel routes, ensuring that tourists who wish to visit Sri Lanka can do so without any issues. To assist both tourists and migrant workers, the Government has set up 24-hour operational services through various State institutions, as stated by the PMD.
