Health officials in Sri Lanka are alarmed by the rising cases of colon and rectal cancers in people aged 30 to 50. This trend mirrors what is happening around the world. These types of cancers used to be mostly found in those older than 50, but new statistics show that more young adults are now being diagnosed. Dr. Hasarali Fernando, a Consultant Community Physician from the National Cancer Control Programme, spoke about this issue at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau. She highlighted that this new trend poses a serious public health risk. Dr. Fernando stressed the need for early screening, prompt diagnosis, and increased public awareness. She urged everyone to pay attention to early signs and seek medical help without delay.
