Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya returned to Sri Lanka this morning (23) after attending the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos, Switzerland. The summit occurred from January 19 to 22, where she engaged in discussions with many global leaders, heads of international financial institutions, and business executives about enhancing Sri Lanka’s economic future. She was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including the Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando. One of the significant moments of her trip included talks with Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Masato Kanda, the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). They discussed the support needed for Sri Lanka's financial stability. Additionally, she met with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and Alexander De Croo, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). These meetings helped strengthen international relations and boosted global confidence in Sri Lanka. During her visit, the Prime Minister shared Sri Lanka’s policy positions on the international stage by giving a keynote speech at the ‘World Women Davos Agenda 2026.’ She also participated in discussions about the job crisis in emerging markets and global skill development. To support Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, she joined a high-level dialogue at the Global Tourism Forum. In her efforts to increase investment opportunities, she held talks with leaders of international firms, such as AP Moller-Maersk and representatives from the Swiss business community. She also visited several vocational training centers in Switzerland. While meeting with Sri Lankan entrepreneurs residing in Switzerland, the Prime Minister highlighted their potential role in contributing to the country’s development.
