In 2025, law enforcement officials in Sri Lanka made the largest drug seizure recorded in recent history, according to Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler. He shared this information during a special media briefing at the Government Information Department on the 22nd of the month, focusing on the “Nation United - National Drive Programme Update.” ASP Wootler revealed that in 2024, authorities confiscated 10,871 kilograms of drugs, which included heroin, cannabis, ice, hashish, and cocaine. In a notable increase, the total amount seized in 2025 reached 23,692 kilograms and 307 grams, more than double the previous year's total. The quantity of cannabis seized also saw a significant rise from 8,359 kilograms in 2024 to 17,189 kilograms in 2025. Additionally, during 2024 and 2025, Sri Lankan authorities managed to bring back 21 drug traffickers who had been hiding in other countries. The Police Spokesman noted that Red Notices were issued for 96 drug traffickers who are still on the run abroad, and efforts are underway to extradite them back to Sri Lanka as soon as possible. Furthermore, in these two years, initial legal steps were taken to confiscate 354 gold sovereigns for state custody. Police also seized 77 vehicles bought with illegal money. In total, 30 houses were taken into custody, 1,197 perches of land were frozen, and assets valued at Rs. 353.9 million were restricted.
