The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the plan to start the third phase of the Baseline Road Extension Project. In 2009, the government at that time agreed to build a six-lane road that is 0.86 km long, stretching from the Kirulapone junction to Dutugemunu Street on the Colombo–Horana road. However, the project was put on hold due to the economic crisis in 2022. Recently, it was recognized as a key infrastructure project under the National Road Master Plan. So far, about 90% of the necessary land has been acquired. This project is expected to greatly cut down travel time and lessen traffic jams on the Colombo–Horana road, enhancing urban movement and boosting economic efficiency. As a result, the Cabinet of Ministers has given the green light to the proposal from Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayaka to restart construction on the third phase of the Baseline Road Extension.
