Restoration efforts for the Northern and Talaimannar railway lines began today, November 11. The official launch occurred at the Maho Junction Railway Station and included Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake and India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha. The railway lines suffered extensive damage from Cyclone Ditwah. The Ministry of Transport announced that the restoration will be funded by a US$ 5 million grant from the Indian government. Efforts to modernize the railway lines started several years ago, aiming to enable trains to travel at speeds of 100 kilometers per hour. This development project also involves building five bridges and an underpass for wild elephants to cross safely. However, progress was halted due to the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah last year. With the support from India, restoration work officially started today at Maho Junction Railway Station, according to the Ministry of Transport.
