Air quality in several provinces considered unhealthy for sensitive groups
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the Northern, North Central, North Western, and Western provinces of Sri Lanka is currently between 150 and 200, according to Dr. Ajith Gunawardena, the Media Spokesperson for the Central Environmental Authority (CEA). He noted that air quality has worsened in recent days and this trend has been noticeable over the last 24 hours. Dr. Gunawardena warned that this poor air quality can be harmful to sensitive groups and advised anyone with breathing problems or respiratory issues to get medical help right away. He explained that this situation is affected by air movement from other regions and the ongoing northeastern monsoon. Additionally, human activities such as burning waste and vehicle emissions are significant contributors to the decline in air quality. The public is urged to refrain from burning materials like plastics and polythene. Dr. Gunawardena also highlighted that the Central Environmental Authority is consistently monitoring the Air Quality Index and keeping a close watch on air quality conditions across the country.
