Hiruni gives up after half way mark

download in sri lankan newsCT Sports: Marathoner Hiruni Wijayarathne’s IAAF World Championship campaign came to a disappointing end as she gave up the race after 22km in the women’s marathon in London on Sunday.

Hiruni had clocked one hour and 23 minutes at the 21km mark but could not proceed much further from there onwards.
“I’m super disappointed in myself, especially since training was going so well. I won’t let this bad result impact the future of my competitions for Sri Lanka,” stated Hiruni after her disappointing International debut for Sri Lanka.

The race was won by Kenyan-born Bahraini Rose Chelimo who edged veteran Edna Kiplagat.

Kiplagat hit 40km a second ahead, but Chelimo kicked in the last 2km to win Bahrain’s first medal in the event in 2hr 27min 11sec.

Kiplagat, a two-time previous champion in 2011 and 2013, claimed Silver seven seconds adrift, with American Amy Cragg taking Bronze.
