The Nawagamuwa Police have uncovered a clandestine operation of mixing substandard oil with fuel released from the Kolonnawa Oil Installation and apprehended three persons red-handed on Saturday (29) at Kaduwela.
The suspects had been engaged in the racket for a long time, police said.
Acting on information that the racket was carried out on an enclosed land near the Kaduwela junction police conducted the raid. The suspects were from Akuressa and Kaduwela areas, police said.
The suspects revealed under interrogation that when a bowser full of petrol released from the Kolonnawa installation they would bring it to their site, where they broke the seals and pumped some of the oil to another bowser. Thereafter they would fill the balance with sub-standard oil and use a special adhesive to reset the seal and dispatch them to the petrol stations. The police took into custody two bowsers involved in the illegal operation.
