To stay safe: - At job sites: Drink plenty of water and take breaks in shady areas when possible. - Indoors: Check on older adults and those who are unwell. - In vehicles: Never leave children unattended. - Outdoors: Limit intense activities, seek shade, and stay hydrated. - Dress: Choose lightweight, light-colored clothing. Showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, along with Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 2:00 p.m. A separate Advisory for Severe Lightning has been issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre. This advisory was released at noon on April 25, 2026, and is valid until 11:30 p.m. that same day. Thundershowers with severe lightning may occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, along with Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 1:00 p.m. Temporary strong winds may arise during these thundershowers. The public is urged to take precautions to reduce the risk of damage from lightning activity. The Department of Meteorology recommends that people: - Seek shelter, ideally indoors, and avoid standing under trees. - Stay away from open areas, such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and bodies of water during thunderstorms. - Refrain from using wired telephones and electrical appliances during storms. - Avoid open vehicles like bicycles, tractors, and boats. - Be cautious of fallen trees and electrical wires. - For emergencies, contact local disaster management authorities.
