Sri Lanka s life expectancy rises with success of national immunization programme
Sri Lanka has seen an increase in life expectancy over the last 15 years, mainly thanks to the National Immunization Programme run by the Ministry of Health. Dr. Palitha Karunapema, the Chief Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Unit, shared that many diseases have been effectively controlled through routine vaccinations for children provided by this programme. He spoke during a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau to celebrate World Immunization Week, which takes place from April 24 to 30. Dr. Karunapema pointed out that since the National Immunization Programme began in 1978, Sri Lanka has reached a high level of immunization. He mentioned that this effort has led to the elimination of diseases like polio, neonatal tetanus, and rubella, while also greatly reducing the spread of other infectious illnesses. Additionally, he stressed that this programme has been vital in boosting life expectancy and lowering child mortality rates in Sri Lanka over the past 15 years.
