Premalal Jayasekara to be produced in court following arrest over firearm incident

Former Ratnapura District Parliament Member Premalal Jayasekara was arrested on October 21 in connection with an alleged firearm threat. He is set to appear in front of the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court today, October 22. The Nuwara Eliya Police took him into custody after claims that he threatened someone by showing a gun. Reports say the incident happened during a heated discussion between Jayasekara, who was with his family, and a group of people from Avissawella on a trip. During the argument, he reportedly pulled out a pistol and threatened them. Following a complaint, police arrested him on suspicion. The authorities also mentioned that the gun he had was licensed by the Ministry of Defence but that the license had expired in 2025. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
