Expert committee to monitor implementation of recommendations on Easter attacks
The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has approved a plan to create a system that will oversee the execution of recommendations from the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. Earlier, on May 17, 2021, the Cabinet had agreed to follow the suggestions made by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on the Easter Sunday Attacks and the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security. These recommendations aim to stop similar incidents from happening again. However, there has not been a proper, organized method to track how these recommendations are being put into action. As a result, there is no effective way to assess the progress of their implementation. To address this, the Cabinet has recognized the need for a structured system focused on public and national security to ensure these recommendations are carried out successfully. Consequently, the Cabinet has accepted a proposal from the President, who also serves as the Minister of Defence, to form a committee. This committee will include experts in counter-terrorism and national security, along with representatives from relevant ministries and institutions, all under the guidance of the Presidential Secretariat.
