Govt s objective is to create opportunities for all citizens to enjoy freedom – PM
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that freedom has historically been restricted to a select few in society. She expressed that the government's goal is to ensure that all citizens in Sri Lanka can enjoy and experience freedom equally. These comments were made on March 15 during the launch of a multi-purpose development project linked to the Angunakolapelessa Tank. This project was initiated under the “Pohosath Gamak” program of the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment for the benefit of the public, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Media Division. Alongside the development project for Angunakolapelessa, a new boating facility and a cafeteria at Leisure Island were also inaugurated. While speaking to the attendees, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya noted that the multi-purpose development project for the Angunakolapelessa Tank has received over 700 days of voluntary support from the community, which she highlighted as very important. With funding from the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, the Angunakolapelessa Pradeshiya Sabha worked together with divisional councils, public safety committees, youth groups, trade associations, and many other community members to rapidly develop this site into a significant project. She pointed out that this initiative showcases what can be accomplished when people unite for a common good. Dr. Amarasuriya remarked that building a nation is not solely the responsibility of the government. She believes that when intellectuals, religious leaders, youth, businesspeople, and the public come together under strong and responsible leadership, they can create a resilient country that cannot be easily harmed by any adversarial forces. She stressed that people living in rural areas, who lead tough and industrious lives, also deserve to enjoy freedom. For too long, such freedom has been confined to a privileged few. As a government that aims to promote a dignified cultural life for all, it is essential to create more spaces like this for people to relax, walk, and spend time peacefully. The event was attended by members of the Maha Sangha, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Upali Pannilage, other ministers, parliamentarians, government officials, and local residents.
