Iranian assembly to meet within one day to choose new supreme leader
Iran's assembly of experts is set to convene within a day to elect a new supreme leader. This information comes from Ayatollah Mozafari, a member of the assembly, as reported by Iranian media. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed last weekend during the first US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The supreme leader holds the ultimate authority on all state matters. The assembly, consisting of 88 members, is tasked with selecting a successor following Khamenei's death. According to Iran's system of vilayat-e faqih, or guardianship of the Islamic jurist, the new supreme leader needs to be a prominent figure with both political and religious power. In the wake of the supreme leader's passing, a temporary three-person leadership council has been established to manage the country. Masoud Pezeshkian serves as Iran's reformist president.
