It would have been a nuclear war - Trump again claims he stopped India-Pakistan conflict

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his assertion that he prevented a war between India and Pakistan last year, which he believes could have turned into a nuclear conflict, by using tariffs as a bargaining tool. In an interview with Fox Business, Trump stated that he resolved “eight wars,” with at least six of these conflicts settled through tariffs. “If you don’t resolve this war, I’m going to impose tariffs because I don’t want to see people getting killed,” he explained. Discussing the tense situation between India and Pakistan, he remarked, “It would have been a nuclear war, in my view. They were really engaged; 10 planes were shot down.” Trump also mentioned that the Prime Minister of Pakistan told him that he had “saved at least 10 million lives” by helping to end the hostilities, emphasizing the critical role tariffs played in avoiding further escalation. He has claimed credit for halting the India-Pakistan conflict over 80 times since May 10 of last year, when he announced on social media that the two nations had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after US mediation. However, India has consistently denied any involvement from a third party in easing the tensions. On May 7 last year, India initiated Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
