Gem or Not? Value of suspected gemstone found in Galaha revealed
The National Gem and Jewellery Authority has released its findings on a suspected gemstone discovered recently in Galaha, Kandy. According to the report by Deershika Ranatunga, who is the Director of the Authority, the stone contains a small amount of Labradorite within a host rock. Labradorite, a type of Feldspar, is known for its unique mineral features. The report highlights that this mineral shows a special optical effect called labradorescence, which often creates blue flashes. Even though Labradorite is a semi-precious gemstone, the Authority concluded that the stone from Galaha does not have significant commercial value. A few days ago, a large suspected precious stone was found after a landslide in Delthotawatta, Galaha, prompting police to secure the area. The police reported the find to the National Gem and Jewellery Authority for further investigation. As a result, officials from the Authority visited the site to conduct their checks.
