Nepal report recommends prosecution of ex-PM Oli over deadly 2025 uprising
A report supported by the Nepal government has suggested that former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other officials should face prosecution over the deadly uprising in September 2025. This uprising, which took place on September 8 and 9, resulted in the deaths of at least 77 people and started due to a short social media ban. It reflected deep-rooted anger about economic troubles. On the first day of the protests, at least 19 young individuals were killed during a crackdown. So far, no one has been held accountable for these deaths. A leaked version of the report, shared by local media and seen by AFP on Thursday, stated, “It was decided to recommend to the Government of Nepal that an investigation, inquiry, and prosecution be carried out against the then executive head, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.” The report also called for investigations and prosecutions of former interior minister Ramesh Lekhak and former police chief Chandra Kuber Khapung. It noted that Lekhak, who had the overall responsibility for home administration, security agencies, and law and order, along with Oli, did not take any action on the afternoon of the protests to prevent more casualties. Oli, a four-time prime minister, lost in the recent elections, and new parliament members, including the incoming prime minister Balendra Shah, are scheduled to take their oaths later today. The report mentioned that while there was no proof of an order to shoot, it stated that “no effort was made to stop or control the firing,” leading to the tragic loss of even minor victims due to their negligence.
