Essential goods prices rise amid fuel hike, CAA conducts raids
Prices for essential goods in Sri Lanka have jumped after the recent rise in fuel costs, according to traders. Wholesale sellers in Pettah have noted a significant increase in the prices of important items like lentils, dried fish, and coconut oil. In response, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has started raids and investigations across the country to stop unfair practices against consumers. Officials have warned that some sellers are trying to create fake shortages by hoarding essential food items and raising prices excessively. To address this during the festive season, the CAA has assigned all investigation officers to work continuously, even on weekends and public holidays. The public is encouraged to report any unfair practices or market issues by calling the hotline at 1977.
