President Donald Trump stated on CNN Monday that the Strait of Hormuz will be “open very soon.” He expressed a desire to have this crucial shipping route managed jointly by the United States and Iran. When CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked him when the strait might reopen, Trump replied, “That’ll be open very soon,” if talks with Iran continue to progress. He mentioned, “It’ll be jointly controlled,” adding, “Me and the Ayatollah, whoever the Ayatollah is, or whoever the next Ayatollah is.” Trump also talked about a significant change in Iran's leadership, referencing strikes early in the conflict that targeted much of Iran’s top leaders. He said, “There’s automatically a regime change,” and suggested that recent discussions over the weekend indicated potential for easing the conflict. “But we’re dealing with some people that I find to be very reasonable, very solid,” Trump told Collins. “The people within know who they are, they’re very respected, and maybe one of them will be exactly what we’re looking for.”
