Sri Lankan delegation meets Indian Lok Sabha Speaker
A delegation from Sri Lanka, led by Parliamentarian S. M. Marikkar, visited Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the Parliament House. This meeting aimed to enhance the relationship between the two countries. Speaker Birla pointed out that India and Sri Lanka have a rich history in civilization, culture, and language that goes back thousands of years, calling Sri Lanka a close and valued neighbor. He highlighted India’s quick development, mentioning that a strong focus on research, innovation, and infrastructure has helped the nation grow, even in uncertain global times. Birla reaffirmed India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He also emphasized India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, explaining that better cooperation in infrastructure and connectivity could lead to new opportunities for both nations. The discussion included ways to improve parliamentary cooperation through organized exchanges, sharing successful practices, and strengthening democratic institutions. Birla informed the delegation about the creation of an India–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group to enhance legislative connections. He also stressed the role of parliamentary committees in ensuring accountability and good governance. Supporting the idea of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” Birla confirmed India’s readiness to assist friendly neighboring countries. Later, the delegation met with the Parliamentary Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs and is set to meet the India–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group during their visit.
