A woman who was allegedly kidnapped in the Vavunativu area of Batticaloa was rescued yesterday, the 19th, from a public well in Nellikadu, where she was found in serious condition. Authorities have also reported finding the body of another woman in the same well. Neighbors heard the cries of the abducted woman and quickly went to check. They found her nearly drowning in the well. With help from the police and local residents, she was pulled to safety and taken to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for medical care. The woman, who is 26 years old and lives in Kottiyapulei, was identified by police. Initial investigations show she was taken while walking along a road with her daughter. The kidnappers are said to have attacked her and then thrown her into the well. Based on her information, officials later found another female body in the well. Police believe this body might belong to a woman who went missing last month in Vellaveli. Family members recognized her by the shoes found at the scene, but police said they will officially confirm her identity after a post-mortem and DNA tests are completed.
