Public transport services, including trains, to be limited on Wednesdays
Public transport services, including train services, will have reduced operations on Wednesdays, which are now designated as government holidays, as stated by Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa. He explained this decision during a Cabinet press briefing today (17), noting that the government has decided to make Wednesdays a public holiday every week until further notice due to the ongoing fuel crisis. Jayatissa mentioned that various options were examined before choosing this day. The idea of creating a three-day weekend from Friday to Sunday was turned down because it could greatly affect government functions and the economy. By making Wednesday a holiday, the government intends to keep state institutions active from Monday to Tuesday and Thursday to Friday. The minister highlighted that this arrangement allows public services to continue without fully halting administrative work. This decision is a temporary response to the fuel supply issues caused by the current conflict in the Middle East. The main goal of reducing the number of working days for government offices is to save existing fuel resources while ensuring that Sri Lanka is ready for any potential global challenges.
