Illegal assets worth Rs. 55.5 million linked to drug trafficker frozen
The Illegal Assets Investigation Division has put a freeze on assets worth Rs. 55.5 million linked to a suspected drug trafficker. This action came after the division received a complaint about illegal wealth gained from drug trafficking. Investigators found that a vehicle, valued at Rs. 15.5 million, was bought in the name of the suspect’s wife with money believed to be from drug trafficking. This vehicle was frozen under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and the Colombo High Court later extended this order. The suspect's wife was arrested and brought before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. Further inquiries indicated that the suspected drug trafficker had also acquired a three-storey house and land valued at around Rs. 40 million in Weligampitiya, located within the Ja-Ela Police Division, under the same name. A freeze order for this property has been issued for seven days starting March 13, 2026. The Illegal Assets Investigation Division continues its investigation.
