The Additional Secretary to the President for the Clean Sri Lanka Programme, Engineer S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, announced that low-floor buses designed for persons with disabilities will be introduced before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. He spoke at a press conference today (13) at the Department of Government Information, discussing the start of this project and how these buses will be added to the public transport system. Sugeeshwara emphasized that while everyone can use the buses, persons with disabilities will have priority during their travels. B.M. Piyathilaka, the Chief Executive Officer of Lanka Metro Company, confirmed that the new bus services will launch from the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center. He mentioned that five routes have been selected, with the bus service set to start on two routes: Makumbura to Pettah and Makumbura to Kadawatha. Piyathilaka also shared that an additional 100 buses have been ordered, expected to arrive by August, and another eight buses will be acquired through Japanese assistance. Furthermore, the bus service plans to expand to include the Kasbewa–Pettah, Panadura–Town Hall, and Panadura–Battaramulla routes.
