Over 600kg of narcotics discovered in multi-day trawler seized by navy- Minister
More than 600 kilograms of drugs have been found on a multi-day fishing boat that the Sri Lanka Navy seized for allegedly carrying illegal narcotics. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala shared this information. The fishing vessel was captured during a special naval mission in the deep waters off Sri Lanka's southern coast. It is expected to be brought to land in the next two days. The Minister also mentioned that security forces discovered a significant number of weapons on board the vessel. On March 7, the Navy captured another fishing trawler in a different operation, also in the southern deep sea, where they recovered 102 kilograms of heroin and 900 grams of cocaine. This discovery came after an investigation when the trawler was taken to Dikkowita Harbour. Six individuals on the trawler were arrested as well. At an event today (10), Minister Wijepala stated that efforts are ongoing to combat the drug trafficking network. He emphasized the importance of cleaning up the society that rehabilitates and releases drug addicts. The Minister noted that the Sri Lanka Police, Special Task Force (STF), and other security forces are collaborating to dismantle this network. "We are focused on breaking the supply chain. We must also improve the community where drug addicts are released. Thus, it is crucial to dismantle this drug supply network, which is linked to organized crime," he said, highlighting the joint efforts of the Sri Lanka Police, STF, and the Tri-Forces to achieve this goal.
