Twenty-two of the 32 Iranian sailors rescued after the sinking of the warship ‘IRIS Dena’ were moved to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) base in Koggala after being released from Karapitiya Hospital on October 7. The disaster happened when the Iranian frigate ‘IRIS Dena’ was returning to Iran after taking part in the Milan multilateral naval exercise in India. The Sri Lanka Navy had previously rescued all 32 sailors from the sinking ship and brought them to Karapitiya Hospital in Galle. Reports indicate that ten Iranian sailors remain in the hospital for further medical care. The Iranian Navy vessel was carrying over 100 people when it encountered trouble about 40 nautical miles off Galle's coast. Sadly, at least 87 sailors are reported to have died in the incident, which has heightened tensions between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf region. Recently, post-mortem examinations were performed on the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors who lost their lives in the attack on the ‘IRIS Dena’ at Galle National Hospital.
