Another Iranian vessel near Sri Lanka s Exclusive Economic Zone, Cabinet Spokesman
An Iranian ship has been spotted near Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Economic Zone, according to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. During a Parliament session today (05), Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa mentioned the presence of another Iranian vessel close to the Port of Colombo. In response, Minister Jayatissa indicated that the government has more information than what the Opposition Leader has shared. He assured that the government is taking steps to manage the situation, aiming to reduce loss of life and maintain peace in the region. A detailed report will be submitted to Parliament once the necessary actions are completed. Minister Jayatissa emphasized, “We have more facts than the Opposition Leader knows. The government is fully informed and is working to resolve this issue, lessen casualties, and maintain peace in the region. The ship is not in our territorial waters; it is in the Exclusive Economic Zone near our national waters. We are doing our best to address the situation.” He pointed out that Sri Lanka strives for international peace, particularly in the Indian Ocean, which is a significant goal. He added that many serious developments are occurring in the Indian Ocean beyond what has been publicly known. The Minister confirmed that Sri Lanka is acting according to international law and humanitarian principles to ensure stability in the region. He stated, “We will share more information later. For now, the government is responsibly working to reduce casualties and protect peace in the Indian Ocean, following international guidelines. More updates will come later today.” He also noted that the situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly severe. Therefore, he urged, “This is not a time for jokes, political rivalries, or misleading statements in the media or Parliament. All politicians and public figures should communicate responsibly during this crucial global situation.”
