Around 80 bodies have been found from the Iranian naval ship IRIS Dena, which sank near the coast of Sri Lanka after being attacked by a U.S. military submarine, according to Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra in a statement to Ada Derana. He mentioned that the Sri Lanka Navy received a distress signal from the ship early in the morning and managed to rescue 32 people. Two of those rescued are in serious condition, and he expressed hope for their recovery. The Deputy Minister noted that the ship was on its way from Visakhapatnam Port in India to Iran when the incident occurred. He added that reports about the ship surfaced as it was leaving Visakhapatnam Port. In Parliament, the Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that there were more than 180 people aboard the vessel. Hemachandra confirmed that this number is correct. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced today that the U.S. sank "an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters" in the Indian Ocean, stating, "Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo." Hegseth did not identify the Iranian ship involved in the attack.
