The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has approved financial support for farmers who grow paddy in the upcoming 2026 Yala season, allowing them to buy fertilizers. During their meeting on August 18, 2025, the Cabinet also agreed to continue fertilizer subsidies that were previously approved for the 2025/26 Maha season. The Agriculture Minister presented the proposal, which will give Rs. 25,000 for each hectare of paddy cultivated, with a limit of two hectares per farmer. Additionally, farmers can receive a subsidy of Rs. 15,000 per hectare for other crops grown in paddy fields that are not used for rice, based on recommendations from the Director General of Agriculture and decisions made in seasonal meetings.
