The U.N. human rights office has called for an investigation into a terrible attack on a girls' school in Iran. They did not name the parties responsible for the attack. The U.N. High Commissioner, Volker Turk, emphasized the need for a quick, fair, and thorough investigation into what happened. Spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani spoke at a press briefing in Geneva, labeling the incident as “horrific.” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that U.S. forces would never intentionally target a school, following reports from Iranian state media that over 160 people were killed on the first day of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. In the meantime, Iran held a mass funeral for 165 schoolgirls and staff who died on Saturday, which Iran claims was a result of a U.S.-Israeli attack on a school in the southern city of Minab. The Israeli military has denied conducting any strikes in that region. Throughout its ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israel has rejected accusations of attacking Palestinian civilians, only to later admit to such incidents when faced with clear evidence, often calling them “accidental.” The attack on the school occurred on Saturday after the U.S. and Israel announced their joint military actions against Iran, marking the deadliest attack on civilians in the conflict so far. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the U.S. and Israel of killing the schoolgirls. He stated, “These are graves being dug for more than 160 innocent young girls who were killed in the U.S.-Israeli bombing of a primary school. Their bodies were torn to shreds,” along with a photo of newly dug graves. He added, “This is how the ‘rescue’ promised by Mr. Trump looks in reality. From Gaza to Minab, innocents murdered in cold blood.”
