A fisherman was arrested on October 23 for illegal fishing using tractor-mounted winches. He was caught by officers from the Kalutara District Fisheries Office while he was using the winches to operate seine nets close to the Kudawa Fisheries Harbour in Maggona. The fisherman, who lives in the Maggona area, will appear in the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court. This arrest occurred after a group of fishermen recently held a Satyagraha campaign in front of the Presidential Secretariat. They were asking the government to lift the ban on using tractor-mounted winches for seine net fishing. The campaign started on February 5 and lasted for nine days, ending on February 13 after discussions between the fishermen's representatives and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
