Former Inspector of Police Jagath Nishantha, who was wanted for a shooting near the W15 Hotel in Weligama in 2023, was arrested yesterday when he returned to Sri Lanka, according to police reports. The Matara Magistrate’s Court had earlier issued orders for the arrest of eight former members of the Colombo Crimes Division, including ex-IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, naming them as suspects in the shooting incident that occurred on December 31, 2023, in the Pelena area of Weligama, Matara. On that date, a group of officers from the Colombo Crimes Division went to Weligama to apprehend individuals linked to the notorious criminal Nadun Chinthaka Wickremeratne, known as ‘Harak Kata.’ Police stated that officers in plain clothes were attacked from inside the W15 Hotel, which led them to fire their weapons in defense. Soon after, a mobile patrol vehicle from the Weligama Police Station arrived and mistakenly opened fire on the van carrying the CCD officers, believing it was transporting criminals. As a result, the van fled the scene, but during this incident, two CCD officers were shot. One of the injured, 47-year-old Police Sergeant Upul Chaminda Kumara, later died from his injuries while receiving medical care.
