Admiral Stephen T. Koehler, the Commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, visited Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, at the Ministry of Defence today (19). They talked about ways to increase cooperation and enhance maritime security for stability in the Indo-Pacific region, as shared by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka on ‘X’. They also discussed the changing security situation in the Indian Ocean Region and agreed on the importance of working together to tackle new maritime challenges, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence. The two sides highlighted the need to improve joint efforts in maritime awareness, share information better, and coordinate responses to natural disasters and humanitarian crises. The U.S. team reiterated its support for Sri Lanka in fighting transnational threats like illegal trafficking and other security issues, as stated. They also reviewed the ongoing collaboration between the U.S. and Sri Lankan armed forces, including training exchanges and joint activities. The Defence Secretary thanked the U.S. Government for its long-term support and generous contributions to Sri Lanka. He specifically mentioned the TH-57 Sea Ranger 10 helicopters, the B-Type Reliance Class 210-foot Cutter, and humanitarian aid during cyclone Ditwah. He also expressed appreciation for the ongoing disaster relief and humanitarian support provided to Sri Lanka.
