Ryan Routh has received a life sentence for trying to kill President Donald Trump on a golf course in Florida in September 2024. The 59-year-old was convicted last year for his attempt to assassinate Trump, who was a presidential candidate at the time, at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. A US Secret Service agent saw a rifle barrel sticking out from some bushes and shot at Routh, who then ran away but was arrested close by. Judge Aileen Cannon stated in her sentencing memo that Routh’s actions “clearly deserve a life sentence.” She noted that he took months to plan the assassination of a leading presidential candidate, showed a willingness to harm anyone who got in his way, and has shown no regret or remorse to his victims. Routh’s attorney, Martin Ross, announced plans to appeal the decision. During the trial, which started on September 8, Routh pleaded not guilty and chose to defend himself. Originally from North Carolina and living in Hawaii before his arrest, Routh behaved oddly in court, even challenging Trump to a golf match and referencing Adolf Hitler and Russian President Vladimir Putin. After the jury found him guilty, Routh tried to stab himself in the neck with a pen, but US marshals quickly removed him from the courtroom.
