A truck lost control on a downhill mountain road and fell into a ravine in the central Philippines, resulting in the deaths of nine workers inside, according to police reports. The workers were returning to their office after delivering crude oil and supplies in a farming area of Bayawan city, located in Negros Oriental province. Their truck, which was carrying five drums of crude oil, went off the road and dropped into a ravine that is 30 meters (98 feet) deep. The accident occurred just before noon on a clear day, and the reason for the crash is still unknown. The workers passed away while being transported to a hospital, as stated by provincial police chief Col. Timmar Alam. The Philippines has a troubling history of serious road accidents, often attributed to poor traffic law enforcement, reckless driving, old vehicles, and insufficient safety barriers and signage.
