Donald Trump has stated he will definitely impose tariffs on European nations that oppose his request to take control of Greenland. European allies have come together to support Greenland's right to self-governance. Denmark's foreign minister stressed that the US president cannot bully his way into owning the semi-autonomous territory. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reaffirmed that the future of Greenland should be decided by its people and the Danes only. On Monday, Trump did not dismiss the possibility of using force and confirmed he would go ahead with the planned tariffs on goods coming to the US from the UK and seven other NATO countries. When NBC News asked if he would consider using force to take Greenland, Trump replied, "No comment." He announced a 10% tariff on all goods shipped from Britain to the US starting February 1, which would rise to 25% from June 1, until an agreement is made for the US to buy Greenland from Denmark. This tariff plan would also apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, all NATO members established in 1949. When asked if he would implement the tariff threat, Trump told NBC News, “I will, 100%.” He also mentioned that Europe should concentrate on the conflict with Russia and Ukraine, saying, “That’s what Europe should focus on - not Greenland.”
